Transfer Case Seal Leaking
Hey everyone, so I have an 03 Disco love it been a great ride. This is the second time I have the Seal go out I am pretty sure it is the Seal where the transmission meets. It is leaking pretty bad and I would like to save some money, thinking of changing it myself.
I should not have to pull the transmission to change this seal should I? I have the RAVE disk and it seems pretty straight forward. Has anyone changed this before that would be willing to offerer advice.
Also side note here the seal was replaced about 18 months ago they should last longer any thoughts on why this seal is going out maybe a bearing vibrating if that is possible?
You help is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeremiah

Jeremiah - you should consider trying White Shepherd (you can get it at most auto parts stores) before replacing the seal. Adding it to the tcase will sometimes cause leaky seals to "repair" themselves. My experience has been that it helps a great deal, but I still get a little seepage on long trips.
If you do end up replacing the seals yourself, post up your experience. I'd be interested to see how it goes.

i also recommend WS. My t-case and rear axle had some seepage and it was gone within a week of pouring in WS. It only works if its seeping. NOT if it is dripping constantly due to cracked/broken, or missing seal/gasket.
Mine was beyond any sealing fluid, I needed a speedi sleeve to correct for the groove in the shaft made by the seal over the years. I've done a lot of them over the years on tons of cars. Takes just mins to install once the t-case is out. I'll try and dig up my input shaft measurements but I'm pretty sure I found them in Rave.
Chances are you will continue to throw seals at it if this is your problem. I found that I ordered #99176 for mine, but it was earlier this summer. The other thing is the housing for the seal could be a bit worn, often you can use some Curil-T around the endge of the seal to keep it from walking.

It seems like I'm the perfect candidate to use some White Shepherd. I was greasing the u joints on my front driveshaft last weekend and noticed the transfer case was seeping. I wish I could include a picture, but I can't find my camera cord for anything.
Anyway, have you guys used the "Transmission Sealer" or the "Oil Stop Leak" for that purpose? Common sense says the transmission sealer, but I just have to ask...
Thanks for the help.

I honestly used the White Shepherd Oil Stop Leak. The $19 bottle. I believe you can use the Power steering stop leak since its says so...

I would drain your t-case use refill with 85-145 gear oil less the amount of the WS bottle...

I used the White Shepherd product on my DI transfer case and it worked great. Two years later and still no leaks or seepage. I used the Universal Products rear main seal product on my DII. It too worked very well. I would highly recommend the Univeral Products products...By the way, no affiliation,. Phil in San Diego
