Default Transfer case solenoid

My transfer case is stuck on Hi, and I cannot shift to Lo. It's been traced to the solenoid that locks the shifter which is stuck for some reason.

I checked the fuse, and it's fine, so probably not electrical problem....I'm thinking that I want to just remove the pin from the solenoid. I don't think I'll be stoopid enough to try to shift while the gear's engaged...

I've heard that you can get to this solenoid from the center console, without having to drop the transfer case. Has anyone done this?

How do you pull the **** off both the transfer case and the gear selector poles? It's on there pretty tight...maybe just yank?

If anyone's done this, I'd really appreciate your input! Planning on spending all day tomorrow tackling this project...

You can remove or disable the solenoid, it is only there as a saftey device, I have done this before but know that it can be done, going thru the console with out pukking the t/case.

Well, I got stuck at one of the first steps: Taking off the **** for the gear shifter (PRND thing). I understand it's just pressed on, but man, it is on there tight. If anyone's sucessfully pulled one off, I'd like to know how you did it!

you have to pry off the top cover first, then theres a pin in there with a little locking clip on it, remove that and you can get the button out and access the 13mm nut that holds the whole thing on, be sure you dont lose the spring for the button, once you remove that you can get the gear shift off

as for the transfer ****, its screwed on, just turn it

looked at a few picts online and it seems that the transfer **** and the shifter may just be screwed on, not pressed on, not entirely sure of that though, try giving it a turn

You can download a copy of the rave cd here:

http://green-oval.com/joomla/index.p...&Itemid=29

The relay that activates the solenoid is under the glove box.... After downloading your rave cd, you can mount the iso file using Alcohol or a similar program.

That cd has all the information about the wiring and component location of your car. Maybe instead of removing your solenoid, you can find the problem and fix it...

Hope it helps...

Thanks for the link. Great resource.

I believe, though, that the solenoid defaults to "locked" position w/o power, so it has to be a mechanical fix.
