Default transmission; hot

well i went on the freeway for the first time today. where the shifter **** is, below it where it says p P-R-N-D and stuff. it was really hot when i was driving on the freeway. is it just because its an old car and older cars do that or low on transmission fluid?

Older cars dont just "do stuff" because they are old.
When was the last time you checked the trans fluid? Did the trans temp light come on?
If your insulation has rotted away you can get heat from the transmission and the exhaust coming up into the passenger compartment.

Ok kido, I know that this is your first car and that you are learning, and we are here to help.
With the engine running open the hood, and stand infront of the truck. On the left towards the back of the engine at the firewall will be a dip stick with a rubber plug on top.
Take a clean rag and pull the dip stick out, wipe it clean and re-insert it into the tube, pull it back out and check the fluid level. Just like checking the oil level only with the engine running.
The fluid should be a bright red and not smell bad. It should be at the FULL mark, if it is low then buy a quart of Dexron II transmission fluid and add one pint, then check the fluid level again the next day after driving.
Got it? Good.
Next question.

Trannys run hot, don't worry about it as long as you stay current on your services. Service them more often as they get older, every 15,000 to 20,000 miles and they will keep going.

No problem. Have your dad show you how and then check it at every oil change.
Now to change the transmission fluid in your truck is very easy, just like changing the oil.
There is a drain plug in the bottom of the transmission oil pan, remove the plug, drain out all the trans fluid, replace the plug, refill with Dexron III. It will takejust over4 quarts, have 6 on hand.
You refill throught the dip stick tube.
