Yep, mine was similar and it turned out to be the XYZ switch which I opened up and refurbished. When the M&S lights flash it's usual to automatically engage 'limp home mode', i.e. third gear only from start off to finish. Sometimes when you restart the engine the problem resolves itself in the short term but the defect is intrinsic and remains. Use an OBD2 code reader and download the autobox transmission codes.

In your case it could be the above said switch, low battery voltage or poor earth terminal connection or even an a defective BCU but without the codes you'll never be sure.

To refurbish you will need to remove, drill out the circa 10 rivets (alloy) clean the terminals inside and maybe lift/reset them to make better contact, spray the internals with electrical contact cleaner and then apply petroleum jelly (Vaseline) reassemble and replace the rivets with M5x12mm?? stainless screws with nyloc nuts. When you remove the xyz switch from the autobox do make a very careful note of the exact position as it is marginally adjustable on the two holding bolts.

Note: use electrical spray cleaner lubricant on the plug and socket of the harness.

Thanks for the write-up Offroad. I woke up this morning to Bertha being stubborn and not running, jumped her (thank god for nice little old lady neighbors who lend out their vehicles for jumps), and limped around town with the M&S lights flashing. By afternoon the lights were off, Bertha was breathing normally and all was 'normal'.. wondering if I have the same issue or if I magically ran the battery down over night somehow. I don't recall leaving a light on, etc. SOooooo.. looks like I'll be having codes read if it happens again.

Keep us posted 555 and good luck!

My M and S lights flashed on me after off-roading through a stream—all the bouncing knocked the contacts loose from the battery terminal. The car was still on and would rev, but wouldn't let me go anywhere. Tapped those back down with a pair of channel locks and was back in business.

Say, any ideas for how to make the battery terminal connection stay put? Mine won't screw tight anymore.

You can buy battery post shims at most auto parts stores. They are essentially just a lead cap you put over the battery lug to enlarge it. You may have to enlarge the opening in the terminal to fit over the enlarged battery lug.

Hi KD, it's good to hear from you albeit the truck is playing games. Your problem may not be the xyz switch but a lack of voltage to the BCU. First check the battery terminals are clean and tight and then the ground points next to the battery ECU area. If this is still an issue checkout the battery volts and amperage output the latter requires either a garage or special amp 'drop' test equipment. If this is OK then checkout the charge rate at the alternator output spades. Lastly, it may be the xyz switch but hopefully not but before stripping that off separate the xyz switch connector and spray with electrical contact cleaner as it may be dirt or water etc in the connector. Also divert the rubber A/C drain away from above the xyz switch by extending it (I think it's 8mm tube) and clipping it aside with a cable tie (zip tie). After that I'm fresh out of ideas but I hope the battery terminals solution works first. Take care - good luck.
