Default Transmission differences???

Will a 4 speed automatic from a '94-'98 Discovery work in a '99-'04 Discovery- if both are 4 speed automatics?

If not, why? and what is the difference?

The 94 - 98 D1 use a ZF 4HP22.
The 99 - 04 D2 us a ZF 4HP24.

I am not sure about the electronics in relationship with the two types.

Maybe Disco Mike can shed some light on this subject.

From your inbox, you can send discomike a PM.

I am hoping others on the forum can shed some specifics on this conversion.

My question to you is why do you want to do that? What is your situation?

I am looking at a '99 Discovery II that needs a transmission, and I found a transmission at our local recycler for a '97 and it's only $300 (versus driving a long distance to get the $700 transmission that came out of a 2000 Discovery II.)

I guess I am just trying to be cheap, eh?

Thanks for your input.

While waiting on a transmission expert to reply specifically to your question, check this web site out.

This is an auto recycled parts aggregator in the US. you can see if they show the two units as interchangeable. Try searching by year / model for both and see what comes up.

I'm familliar with the link you sent, and upon performing the search, it asks if it is an "SD" or "Series II"- if I choose "SD", it shows parts removed from '94-'99 Discoverys available. If I choose "Series II", it shows parts removed from '99 and up Discoverys.

I wonder if there was some overlap during the production year in '99?

From what I have read in the recent past few minutes, I found the following information:

The 4HP22 is a 4-speed longitudinal automatic transmission for passenger cars from ZF Friedrichshafen AG. Introduced in 1980, it was produced through 2003 and has been used in a variety of cars from BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, Maserati, Peugeot, Porsche, Lincoln, Austin, and Volvo.

A D1 tranny will not work in a D2. The D1 is a cable shifting type tranny where the D2 has it's own ECU to regulate shift points.

One thing you must know plowman...the DI is from 1994-1999.5.
The DII, a whole other animal is from 1999.5-2004.
Nothing from a DII will work in a DI and vise versa.
So...you MUST KNOW if the 1999 that you are looking at is a DI or a DII.
If it has a mechanical odometer it is a DI, LCD odometer it is a DII.
