Default Transmission fluid & filter could have been easier

So today I started out to replace the transmission fluid and filter on my Discovery II. Happy I did, the fluid did not look good when I drained. Once I dropped the pan I found out the two screws holding the filter were stripped beyond usable . So I decided to leave the filter in and come back later and replace when I get new replacement screws as I will have to easy-out the screws. So that done as I am re-setting the pan one of the screws snaps @ 8lbs (really?).
Good news, it is a center bracket and so until I can order a new screw (7 because I will replace all when I go back in) I do not see a leak from the gasket. Also I can clearly see the screw so removing the broken one should not be too hard. All said and done, no leaks after a test drive and although a bit frustrating, all is well. Looking forward to finishing this job in a couple of weeks.

If your fluid was that bad, once you fix the screws, do another drain and refill to get rid of more of the old fluid.

Thanks Mike,
I had the same thought. I am going to order the pan bolts to both repair and to replace all six. I cannot seem to find a spec for the two bolts holding the filter on or the one for the drain. Rave just calls them bolts, no size. Do you or anyone else have any idea where I can get this information so I can have these before I drop the pan?

Hi, been able to find a few part Nos which relate to the '03 Auto box;

Sump plug; STC4098 and seal washer STC4099

Sump pan bolts; RTC5735
As for the filter bolts (strainer bolts) there are several different numbers, depending on the bolt lengths required:- 65mm RTC4278, 83mm RTC4649, 60mm RTC4277 or 30mm RTC4279. The confusion is because all of these bolt is described as -'screen to control unit, screw, long, **MM' - so you need to get them out the know which is the right one. From the link below RTC4278 look like it may be the one as there 2 listed for the box.

Check out this link Casing & Sump - Land Rover Workshop
Hope this helps.

Great info, I might want to get 3 each of the four sizes. Worst case I can finish the job with a couple of extra bolts.

Thanks for the help.
