Transmission Gone!!
While out today my tranny went out, just gt it tow'd home. Doesn't matter which gear, park is now neutral. Tow truck driver thinks the syncros are out. Guess I'm shopping for a new transmission.
Any suggetions?

Brian,
Sorry to hear the bad news. I'm sure other folks here will have additional sources, but Atlantic British has remanufactured units for $2995. I'm not a Rover expert but I've read several stories about the local transmission shop screwing up the overhaul so I probably wouldn't go that route myself. Maybe you can find a used one at a local boneyard.

Here's a guy in Denverwho is parting out a couple of Discovery Series I trucks, including the transmissions:

Thanks for the links, I will not let any of the local shops touch my rover. i have a feeling with the help of this forum and my knowledge of vehicles I can do a better job and not get screwed.

What actually happened, would the tranny no longer shift? Are you sure it is the tranny and not something else? Try locking up your t/cse to High lock and see if you can now drive it. There is a reason for this test.
If you do need a tranny, go to http://www.roverlandparts.com/index....TS&Category=95
for a good guaranteed unit.

God, my crstal ball does work on Sundays even when I am nor out on the trail.
Your problem is not the tranny, you blew your rear diff.
A quick test, put the t/case back in High, put your tranny in drive and when you don't move stick you head under the truck and look at your rear drive shaft while stil in drive.
Call me and I'll tell you what to do about your blown up rear diff.

Sounds more like you've got a broken driving member/halfshaft/prop shaft/diff/ than a transmission fault.
Give the prop shafts a good pulling on to check they're ok - if they are then try this:
Start engine, put car in drive without High Lock engaged. Ensure the car doesn't want to move before you get out to have a look underneath to see which prop shaft is moving.
If the rear prop moves and the front is stationary you've broken a rear driving member/halfshaft/diff. I'd expect to hear some serious noise if it was the diff mind you so that's the least likely if it's reasonably quiet while in drive and going nowhere.
If the rear prop is stationary and the front is moving - a driving member, CV or halfshaft or the front diff is at fault.
In either case start from the outside of the vehicle, i.e. from the wheel hub towards the diff. as you're checking both for ease of checking it and least expense in terms of spares.
Hope that helps,
