Default transmission question

will the auto trans out of a 95 with the 3.9 bolt up to the 4.0 in a 97 D1? im just asking because my 97 has the sprag clutch issue where i have to manually shift my auto trans, but the 95 i scooped up the other day shifts just fine... so i am thinking about swapping them out since the 95 will soon be a trail only rig... and has anyone pulled their transmission out? how difficult a job is this? i know its not like changing plug wires and is a pretty involved procedure but is it all relatively straightforward?

According to RAVE... Discovery models 95 through 2002 use transmission ZF4 HP22. The 2003 -2004 Discovery use the ZF4 HP24 which is 15mm longer to accommodate a larger fluid pump. (Unless i mis-read something)

I would say yes it should just bolt up. I simply don't know anything about how compatible the shift cable, switches, etc, might be. Hopefully someone will give their two cents.

Yes your transmission from the 95 will fit the 97. The 3.9 and 4.0 are the same engine with the exception of the 3.9 uses a distributor.

Don't get to happy to soon, http://www.roverlandparts.com/transm...-complete.aspx
shows the 95 tranny as different from a 96 thru 99 D1.
I would ask someone that is into trannys and get the correct information.
Let us know

itll fit. you will most likely have to change the rear housing, it just bolts on and off, its what mates up the to t-box. but the tranny itself is the same
