Default Transmission Question

Hi Everybody -

I am a relatively new Land Rover owner, and have enjoyed it so far.
I own a 2000 Discovery II (4.0 V8) with 159,300 Miles on it.
I know the mileage is on the high side, but it has treated me well.

So recently, the transmission decided to give out. I ordered a transmission off of Ebay, and had a mechanic get everything sorted out.
I got the car back today, but realized that the car wouldn't shift out of 2nd gear. I pulled over, went through 1st gear, and then second gear again, and I maxed out at about 45 MPH. I also realized that the transfer case wouldn't move. Should I replace the transfer case, evaluate the linkages, or is this just a bad transmission? Or, is it something else?

There could be a few different issues, is it a loud whine? Possibly you're in low?

There isn't a loud whine, It just won't budge out of 1st or 2nd. I've been told the transfer case not being able to shift may have something to do with it, but I'm not sure. Is it possible that there is a faulty chip or sensor that is preventing it? Thanks

I don't believe a bad XYZ switch would cause this specific issue. I'm pretty sure the T-case doesn't do much shifting, just high and low.

sounds like you bought a dud tranny. the transfer case not moving could be the neutral safety solenoid failed.

Well, after the mechanic had replaced the transmission, he mentioned that the car needed a transfer case, that this one was locked up. Is there a possibility that they could manually (the shifter **** won't work) put the transfer case in a higher gear, so I can drive it before I order another? Or is that not the problem?

If I were you I'd find another "mechanic". Where are you located?

If the T-Case was locked up , I don't believe the trans would budge at all. Unless, it locked up in neutral. Double check your transmission fluid levels.

Start the truck, let it run while you do the following: Get underneath and pull the "fill" plug on the trans, does fluid spew out? If so, it's full. On my truck, I went a step further and pulled the front of the truck up on ramps and squeezed in a few more ounces. Do this and report back before you do anything else.

I would have to disagree with your mechanic and say that you either purchased a bad tranny or that he did something wrong during the install and is trying to cover his own @$$. Your problem is in your transmission or shift linkage.

Not shifting back and forth from low to high is normally always the solenoid on the t/case.
Did you get a warranty from the seller, if in fact that tranny turns out to be bad you need to contact E-Bay ASAP.
As for the tranny, how much did you pay for it?
