Default Transmission question...I think

First of all, I want to thank you guys for the tips on cleaning my engine compartment from a post in the detailing section. I also needed to ask another question:

I was just under my truck for about an hour, cleaning some of the more stubborn grime away...it's probably all from the leaking that it had before the Intake gaskets were changed and I noticed a large hole on what I think is the transmission. It is approximately 1.5 inches in diameter, and I can see the toothed wheel inside. My question regarding this hole is whether or not it is supposed to be that way. since it is facing forward, it concerns me that any debris might get in there while I am driving. Can anyone please shed some light on this for me? If it is supposed to be plugged with any part, can someone please tell me what part that is?

Is there smaller bolt holes to either side of it? There is a flywheel/flexplate inspection hole on the underside of the bellhousing, but it should have a removable plate covering it

YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!!! Thanks, now all I have to od is locate one, and I'll be driving again. Don't know how long it's been that way, but I won't take any chances while it is still ike that.

Should be ok to drive it while you're waiting for the cover. I've seen beat up farm trucks that had whole flex plate covers removed from like turbo 350's for years and did just fine.
