Transmission Questions
Gentlemen of the Land Rover Forums website,
I have been on and lurking on this forum for more than three years. Great information! Disco Mike, we actually talked two years ago and you were very helpful! That was a cell phone ago and I don't have your number anymore; otherwise, I would call you.
My issue is that the transmission is acting up. Specifically, it is shifting hard from 3rd to 4th; and, today, it was slow to engage into first gear when getting started from a stoplight. Background is this: 2001; 75,000 miles; no service information from previous owner (I have had the car for three years). I am working my way throught the 60k service.
Slowly.
I typically only drive about 5k year; however, this year I got on a deer lease that is 4 hours away and I will be putting some miles on the Disco (and some great off-roading time).
This is the hard part. I don't remember if the tranny was slipping before I changed the filter and drained and filled the system a few weeks ago. At about that same time, if not a week or two before, the SES light came on. I had the codes read: 1590, 0455 and some bank one or bank two codes. I ordered the ultra-gauge this week and it should be here this week. I will get back to you all with the codes.
My question at this time is this: after I changed the tranny fluid I drove it around like the how-to post on this website states; I made sure to fill the tranny with fluid until it was coming out; I made sure that the car was on; the fluid drains out of the fill plug slowly but steady.
Is this enough?
In other words, if I can see any fluid draining out of the fill plug hole when I pull the plug, then does that mean that I have accuratly filled it??!?!? Should it be flowing at a high rate or is "any flow" enough. I don't want to under or over fill the tranny! STUPID BMW, NO DIPSTICK!
I know that this could have been avoided when I changed the fluid by keeping an eye on how much came out and how much came in, but, unfortunatly, I made such a mess and spilled so much there was no way to keep track!
Let me know what ya'll think!
I will get back with the codes. I am thinking that the MAF may be going out with my symptoms.
Also, has anyone ever had the problem where, after they turn off the car and pull the keys from the ignition that all of the lights (and I mean every single one) on the dashboard is illuminated?!?!? This happened to me a few weeks ago after a 4 hour trip in the 100 degree Texas heat. The only thing that made the lights go out was to step on the brake pedal! When my foot came off, then the light went back on! I was late for a ballgame, so I just left the Disco with all of the lights burning and when I came back -- they were off and everything was fine! Disaster averted.
Sorry for the rambling post!
Thanks for the help.

I will post all of the exact codes when I get the scanner on Friday. The fluid was chocolate-red. I did not smell burned - at least not bad.
I had the codes pulled on Friday at Advance and only the 0455 and 1590 were present. I had the other codes a week or so earlier, but I had pulled the battery to reset the light a few days before. Maybe it will take a few days for the MAF and O2 sensors to show up as failed or not?
I know that the ultra-gauge has a live MAF sensor gauge. Would the readings from the gauge help to determine if the MAF is failed or not? What is the reading supposed to be for a MAF? What about the 02 sensors?

First, quit screwing around with the battery cables, if you want to clear codes, do it the correct way only.
Have you fixed your 3 Amigos or the evap issue yet?
Do a complete 5 plus quart drain and refill on the tranny and add a bottle of Lucas Stop Leak to the system.

I did the fix on the shuttle valve and the amigos went away; unfortunatly, a few weeks later they came back with a front, right sensor message. I have not messed with it since then.
What does the Lucas Stop Leak do for the tranny?
I would love to fix the evap issue, but I don't know what to look for! From reading this site, I thought that it may be the gas cap, but I had it inspected last week and it passed -- so that is not the problem. Any suggestions are appreciated.

It may mask the issue long enough so you can trick some other sap into buying the POS. Before lucas try a high mileage ATF like maxlife dex/merc. Like said above Lucas is a product either used to get a couple more months out of a terminal vehicle or to sell said vehicle to another unsuspecting person.
