Default Transmission Service

Hi,

I have an 02 Disco II with 90k on it and have recently had it serviced at my local independent garage. He has advised that the Transmission will need a service and recommended that I take it to the local LR dealer to have this done. A couple of weeks ago I had the transmission lights appear, which cleared after restarting the ignition.

Is it best to take it to the dealer, despite the cost, or look for an independent transmission specialist?

Thanks!

Do it your self, out on the drive way, iut is a drain and refill only. Why pay a dealer $150 plus when you can do it for around $20?

there is however a specific routine to do it yourself. It is a drain and refill, but the refill has to be done a certain way. Let us know if you want to do it yourself, and we'll give you the directions.

afaik the fill procedure isn't anything special, it's just more fun because you don't have a fill tube.

with vehicle cold. refill the atf 'til it drips out of the fill hole. start Disco, bring to temperature, shift through gears slowly several times and add more fluid until it drips slightly out fill hole.

Thanks for all the advice - I will change it myself then!

I have the RAVE CD so will follow the procedures laid down there, unless anyone has a better way?

PS: Thanks for all the work on the site - I am new to the LR world (although I was born in Solihull in the UK - LRs are too expensive to run there!) and I have found some great advice

Another (hopefully) quick one - the RAVE CD states that in order to do a transmission service the filter needs changing, and in order to do this I will need to remove the Oil sump and replace the gasket. Is this the case? Do I need to change the transmission oil filter?

A transmission service includes replacing the filter. Be shure to research the refill method, as you want to have the correct fluid level.

Yes a true transmission service includes a filter change. Supposedly LR offered this to customers for free at the 30k check up, how many people had their trk serviced at the 30k? Do you know for a fact that your was done at that time? LR recommends only changing the trans filter at 30k and then only fluid after that.
I would recommend that you have the filter changed. In my humble opinion you cant change a filter to often.
So to do the trans service, yes, you will need to buy a trans filter kit, remove the transmission pan and gasket, replace the filter and gasket and then refill the transmission. If you have never done one before and are not very mechanical I would suggest you take it to a transmission shop, or the dealer. Whichever you choose. DO NOT FLUSH THE TRANSMISSION.
Some places will want to "back flush" the transmission, that will just cause problems.
