Another (hopefully) quick one - the RAVE CD states that in order to do a transmission service the filter needs changing, and in order to do this I will need to remove the Oil sump and replace the gasket. Is this the case? Do I need to change the transmission oil filter?
Read your owners manual, the tranny filter is only changed at the 30,000 mile service so just do the drain and fill method I mentioned earlier.

Better check with the dealer to see that the 30K service really has been done on it. If in doubt, change the filter. Costs next to nothing, really easy to do and your better safe than having a clogged filter because it was suppose to have been done at the 30 000 miles.

My thoughts exactly. You cannot assume that the previous owner did what he was supposed to. And just because the service was free still doesnt mean that it was done.

True, but since it was a free service from Rover, he would have been foolish not to. Just call a local dealer and ask them to do an inquirey from Rover, they can tell you.

Some people are very foolish though Mike, not everybody takes care of their car, even if it is free, and that is the point I was trying to make.
If he can call his dealer and find out if it was done or not great, if not then he needs to assume that it was never done.
Whenever you buy a used car you must assume that the previous owner did nothing to it.

OK chaps - I will give the dealer a call tomorrow and make sure it was done and if so I will just do the oil. The confusion came from the RAVE CD saying change to the filter and the service manual saying not to!

Thanks again to all.

A quick update - The 30K service did change the filter and I have now changed the oil. My LR is much happier now! The advice given on a different forum on this site was right - you will need a small pump to get the oil in the fill hole, and I have invested in a set of ramps for future maintenance.
