Default Transmission, service

For a 2001, Disco II, 157k miles

Does anyone know how often the transmission need to be serviced?
Or just how often the transmission oil should be changed?

A mechanic that specializes in Land Rovers told me that the Disco II does not need to have this done.

He did huh? Hmmm....I am NOT a mechanic, but never servicing your tranny doesn't seem very logical to me. Transmission fluid will break down/get dirty over time just like other the other fluids in your vehicle. At your mileage you shouldn't do any sort of chemical flush, but drain and fill with a new filter is a must IMO.

The most common number I've heard for a change is every 30K. Auto Zone sells a filter/gasket kit for $14.99, AB has them for around $50 I think.

At your mileage, every 20,000 miles cause she is no spring chick any longer, using a filter and some Lucas tranny additive every other change.

Land Rover says to change the filter at the first 30k and then leave it alone on DII's.

Personally I change my filter once every 50k and the fluid once a year no matter the miles.
For you I would change the filter and fluid because you have no idea what or when or if anything has ever been done to your truck.

I'll ask here so I don't have to open another thread, but how do you catch 12 quarts of fluid under the truck? does some stay in the torque converter when you drain it ?

ya, you won't get the full 12 quarts of fluid out, i don't know how much, but some does stay in the torque converter.

If you do a drain and fill you will only loose ~5 qts from a DI.
If you change the filter you will loose ~10 qts.

As long as you change the fluid often it is not as important to get all of it out.

The easiest way to catch all of the fluid that drains out of the tranni, or any fluid for that matter, i have found is to do it over a sewer grate.... helps the fish swim through that water easier.
But really, i have found that the "oil changing pans" that you can buy are too small and worthless. Head down to wallmart and grab a large, shallow, plastic bin. It is what i use and cost like 5 bucks.

cool that helps alot. I just was thinking 12 qts in one drain pan was going to be a big mess.

just pay for a bg transmission flush. its easier and it changes all the fluid the first time.
