Default Transmission Shifting

I'm looking for some advice from all you current Series 2 owners out there. I've been scouring the dealerships for a good condition 2000 - 2002 Discovery and I have a question about something I encountered on a test drive last night.

I was testing out a 2000 with low miles, but I noticed that under hard acceleration the transmission seemed to be slow to upshift. At around 60mph the engine seemed to hit about 5000 rpms and I had to let up on the gas before it would shift into a higher gear. If I held it to the floor it seemed like it would just peg the RPMs

To me, it seemed as though there might be some transmission woes, but I'm curious if this is just a vehicle quirk and more normal than I'd expect. I'd hate to disqualify an otherwise mint condition Disco for something that wasn't really a problem.

If you had to get to 5k before it shifted, that is NOT normal. I would be wary.

Seems like an issue. The behavior of my '97 shift is "unusual" compared to other automatics, however, all the Series I Discos I have driven has the same behavior, so it has not worried me too much. Try driving other Disco II to see if does the same thing...

Under a full throttle axcelleration my 99 shift up at around 5000 on a flat road and a little higher on montain driving. The ECU looks at many factors to determine the shift point, I wouldn't loose too much sleep over thede Rover trannys that may not react like your last vehicle.

Thanks for the feedback, I ended up passing on this Discovery for a variety of reasons not counting the transmission.

I'll pay more attention as I test drive others, but be a little less worried about it.

My 95 Disco does something sorta similar but these vehicles are geared very low for off-roading, so when it comes to getting on the highway and speeding up, they lack in that department unless it's supercharged. If I were you, I'd just try to find something with a warranty, 1 month, 1 year, anything. Good luck. They're great vehicles, after buying, you won't want to drive anything else.
