Trouble selling D2, should I sell lift/tires separately
After several weeks doing the Craigslist thing, I am getting annoyed with the constant window shoppers that just ask if it's available and never reply or the people that are supposed to come look and don't show. I realize that since the vehicle needs some work, people likely want to pay bottom dollar and I didn't think the price was out of line at 2700 but am wondering if I should put on stock suspension and another set of wheels with stock size tires that I have kicking around and drop the price to clear out faster. Honestly if I could get in the low 2's I'd be happy.
The truck is an 03 that has typical issues, window regulator, cats, some minor aestheitcs, couple lock actuators, tiny crack on the thermostat housing that seeps like a cup every few weeks. I'm also leaving the inspection sticker good for the rest of the year so the cats don't need to be an immediate concern to pass inspection. It's a good vehicle for the right person it honestly whoever gets it will probably just drive into the ground. Has 156k miles
It has an older 2" OME lift in good shape and brand new (<500miles) 275/65/16 Cooper discoverer at3 on an extra set of rims
I am thinking I should be able to sell the parts for almost 1000, and the truck for 1500 which I'd be happy with. Does that sound reasonable or am I nuts?
it would be less expensive and less of a pain in the *** to take care of the actuators, thermostat, cats and window motors than it would to swap out suspension and tires. The lift and tires aren't holding back a sale.
Maybe list it here, plus add your location and a few pictures. You might have another rover enthusiasts right around the corner, or someone willing to travel.
Although reasonable, for all the small quirks it needs repaired there is others cars selling way cheaper that I would look into before yours. If I am able and willing to repair those items I would look for something cheaper because I know they are out there. Someone who is not going to do the work themselves will not be buying it for fear of the labor rates and bad rep the trucks have. I think you either take your loss and sit it lower, or fix the small items and get a different type of buyer. Just my two cents.

Maybe you're asking too much dosh in the first place for a 17 year old truck. Some people like modded trucks but many don't unless all the other major issues are well sorted and verified.
I agree with all, just that people here seem to be really into beach driving and jeeps. When I was looking at Jeeps, I couldn't believe the poop buckets selling for the price. 3k will get you a rusted 1990 4 cylinder wrangler with like three gears that grind. Compared to that, at least capability wise I thought it was a bargain. I guess part of the problem with these trucks is they will often be worth more to us for driving value than to non enthusiasts. Coming from Bmws, the parts and labor cost don't seem outrageous, but I guess compared to a suburban or something, maybe they are
Here are a few pics, located on long Island, ny
Fix the thermostat and actuators and any other little pic'n pull items. Call out the cats and ask $3k and take $2k. That's the best I could offer. The cats will scare people due to cost unless they know where to get functional ones for cheap and the rest just makes it look neglected.
I would fix what you can. Heck you can get an aftermarket t stat for 20-30 off eBay and that's the britpart brand. Check your local pull a parts for the regulators and fix that. As for the cats, magnaflow makes replacements.... the whole y pipe or just the cats themselves. Here is the link Catalytic Converters
i would fix everything but that and ask the 3k or best offer and take around 2300-2500. Especially if you have service records and possibly get it checked over by an independent rover specialist. If you fix the cats, I would ask around 3300 and take around 2600-2700. Not sure how much it cost to have them cut out and welded up that way but I know it's not expensive down south. Maybe drop a bill or two and have it detailed before you repost it also.
Why are you selling? That is a beautiful looking example of a Discovery 2. Love the green color!
I see on this forum people nickel and diming over LR D-2 that should cost $1500-2000 and we all balk at people who want $5000 plus for a nice example.
These are wonderful machines. Yes they have their quirks and I always say... they are not for the average consumer. My friends and family all comment on liking my D-2 and would like to have one. I always shy them away simply because you have to tinker a little to keep them running in their prime.
We as a LR community should be doing whatever we can to drive up the price on these iconic looking pieces of British machinery.
Trust me I didn't buy my LR because it was cheap. I bought it because it was a timeless example of an off-road machine. I like the Rover V8, I like the solid axles, I like the fact that it is "different".
Take it from me... a "car enthusiast".. 5 years from now we will be saying... remember when you could buy a LR D-2 for only $2000-$5000!!??
These are timeless classics and will be selling for $15,000 plus in the future... Don't believe me?? Ask me in 5 years.
