Default Truck quits

I was supprised to find out my dad's hairdresser has a 98 discovery. shes says its a great truck but.. at about 1/4 tank of gas left, somtimes the truck just stops, but after it stops she can re start it. the check engine light is on, but its probably the fuel cap (she didnt know to screw it till the cap clicks). the truck was a one owner truck they bought a year ago from a private party, however they didnt know to put preimium gas in. so this trucks been going from 1-1.5 years on 87 octane. i told her imediently when she fills up tonight to spend the extra few cents and buy 93 octane. id like to know whats most likley going wroung with her truck?

I would have to say that the fuel pump is overheating and then shutting off.
The fuel pump is immerst in gas and the gas is what keeps it cool, the less gas in the tank the less it is cooled.
Eventually it will just give up the ghost and quit alltogether.

So what has been done, tune up wise, plugs wires additives???
Is the fuel guage accurate or at 1/4 tank it is running out of fuel?
High octane from now on with a good engine flush and induction cleaning in the near future to clean up some of the old cheap gas build up.
