I say trying because I have most everything off except the radiator. Grille is off and I removed one of the rubber brackets. As I was trying to loosen the other bracket the nut didn't turn but the bracket did and is not bent. Not sure what to do. I'm stuck. That nut is in such a tight spot. ..next to the air filter box. Any suggestions?

It will get even harder, if you have both plastic brackets off pull radiator up, there is a screw on passenger side of radiator that holds the trans cooler, undo it then on other side there is an extension that slides into radiator plastic on driver side, that's the tricky part to try to get out & later to slide back in, be careful not to crack plastic on radiator,

 

Thanks all! I've been following the RAVE. It's exhausting. Read a post just now to remove the battery box and the filter box. No need to remove grille. Okay. Doing that tomorrow. I'm beat after today.

 

Well, it's a new day that for sure.

Day 2.

Battery box out. Air box difficulty.... It is an 02" Disco SE if that matters.

For the past 1/2 hour I've been trying to get the filter box out. There are no screws or bolts inside the box. Looked under the wheel well and it appears to be attached from there. I can't figure out how. Looks like three rubber/plastic things that I tried to put a screw driver into with no luck. I'm at the point of fearing I'll break something. Any suggestions?

I do have the grille off... So I can see two screws on the air box side and three on the battery side that I'm assuming come out? ..in order to slide or lift out.

Pulling up on the radiator does nothing. I'm sure this is easier than I'm making it..but I'm used to working on 70" Chevy's. Frustrated at this point.

 

Just pull the air box out. It is held in by 3 post with rubber plugs.

 

Okay! Thanks! Also, the cooler comes up when I pulled up the passenger side of the radiator. Am missing something here. I didn't think they were attached.

 

got the air box out. Yay! Sadly. Pulling the radiator up the cooler doesn't stay. Ugh. It makes no sense.

 

The coolers are attached to the radiator. If you haven't removed the viscous fan, that will help. You have to give yourself enough room to get that cooler detched from the radiator. You don't want to undo those cooler lines. The coolers and pipes need to stay in place, you just have to unscrew them from those radiator side brackets.

You are correct that's its a PITA. Just take your time and be methodical. If you remove the top and bottom coolant hoses from the radiator then you can maneuver it to get the trans cooler unhooked with pipes still connected. you have to be careful or will end up with oil spill and whole new problem of fixing that and refilling the transmission which I would avoid at all costs.

 

OMG! The Radiator is out!! Wow, this radiator is shot! Thank you, thank you, thank you! No lines were disconnected as the RAVE advises. I took a lot of stuff off the truck that I didn't need to but what a crazy experience! I did miss one screw that I didn't think needed to come out. The main issue was that the coolers aren't just screwed to the radiator they have metal pieces which slot into the radiator. It's brilliant engineering but man, I couldn't figure it out...until I started praying for help from the Gods, old and new. haaaa!
