I have been unsuccessful at locating a budget CDL shift capable transfer case shifter for my 2001 Disco. And since I am cheap the idea of buying one for $450 bothers me.
So I started playing with some 3D models:
I think these three parts along with some sheet metal brackets, and a cheap transmission shift cable will allow me to twin stick the thing for under $100 and a couple hours of time on the lathe and mill.
A search for twin stick here resulted in nothing, though I think that is explained by the fact that buying a twin stick canned shifter isn't really cheaper than the Ashcroft unit, and you still have to adapt it to the Disco 2.
So, is there a practical reason a twin stick for hi-low and lock/unlock CDL is a bad idea? If not, I am gonna forge ahead.
I see no issues with it. That price for a CDL kit is priced out of control imo and I've heard it doesn't even fit that great. This would be no different than if you just crawled under the truck and locked it independently with a wrench.
Side note: I saw someone on FB do this but with a combo of 3/8" socket extensions/wobbles and a basic bracket. I'll see if I can find the screenshot I took because it looked incredibly simple (I like simple) and wouldn't require any amount of time on a lathe/mill. Only issue with this solution was the **** they used looked terrible but that's easily changed..
