So the Land Rover dealer where I live uses Penzoil nonsynthetic 5w/30. Why do people always want you to go to the dealership to get your oil changed when they use Penzoil, which from what I hear is not good for Land Rovers? Why doesnt the dealership use synthetic oils?

This is great, thanks. Being that I have never changed my own oil, this will be fun to learn. I usually go to Wally World, pay them the $15 and let them do it. I will give this a try for sure.

Thanks!

never go to Wal-Mart. My dad took his truck there, went and picked it up, drove it home, checked the oil, and there was nothing on the dipstick.

Having been going to Wal-Mart for over four years, I have never had a problem. Used to go to a "quick lube" joint. They charged twice the amount for the same service and products. I will look into changing my own oil. I am sure it is simple to do if I can get to the filter.

What I did is let someone else do it, but I brought my own oil (Mobil 1 synthetic that I bought actually from Wal-Mart). That's a lazy option, but at least you know what you are getting poured into your engine. And it's probably a very little bit cheaper compared to asking them to use the synthetic (if they give you this option at all).

A question that I have is: you are supposed to replace the copper washer on the drain plug. Where do you people get that little thing from?

So the service tech. at the Land Rover dealership where I live said that he doesnt recommend synthetic oils and that switching to a snythetic causes more oil leaks.

that was true in the 70's. Not today. Synthetics might leak a little when you first put them in, but they re-condition all of the seals. If there are deposits clogging a leak, they will clean them out, but then polish the mating surfaces. I say BS. Use synthetics.

Agreed times 3 with okdiscoguy. All oils are compatible today, what the mech told you was indeed from the 70's. THEY WILL NOT CAUSE IT TO LEAK! period dot.....

The dealership here in Austin uses Castrol Syntec (a blend).

Another problem with the quick lube guys, and Wal Mart is the filters. Do some research on filters and see the difference, a cheap filter leads to bad oil recirculating throughout the engine.
