Question Uh-oh! - Engine problem where there shouldn't be

New engine from AB, long block, top hat, all the right stuff. New everything when installed. My indy shop, Strohm Automotive, family owned and GREAT mechanics, particularly in British automotive, MG, Triumph, etc. Have been my mechanics of choice when I can't or won't tackle something (I know my limits). Anyway, all installed April of '21 and has been great until now.

Just started leaking oil out of the crank pulley seal on the timing cover. We thought it might be a bad seal, and leaking seals are not covered by the warranty from AB, so the shop ordered a new seal and a new pulley from AB. Installed and everything is great at idle. At about 1500 rpm, it really starts to leak at the same spot, crank pulley seal. Both the seal and new pulley are LR parts. There shouldn't be pressure in the area, as the seal is only a "splash" seal, not pressurized.

The shop called AB and unfortunately their "tech" guy is no longer there, and quite honestly, they were not any help. They said to search the forums, but with a new engine, somethings not right.

The head mechanic is calling the rebuild shop in NY that did the work for AB for some direction as to where to look.

Any of you with more engine knowledge than me please chime in and give me some ideas so I can pass them on.

Thanks. Really scratching our heads here, but something's not right.

might need a speedi sleeve (think that's what it's called having a brain fart). That is a very easy seal to miss seat and have leaks, everyone makes a mistake and it's possible it was installed wrong kind of both times. Harmonic balancer relatively smooth/quiet (in terms of movement/vibration) when the engine is running?

Clogged PVC valve. If the pully and seal are new speedisleeve shouldn't be needed.

Has the PCV mod been done? That seal is not a splash only seal, it is a pressure seal. When I install them I do so with a coat of silicone on the od, get it in square.

AB has been somewhat helpful, but all those great How-to and tech video guys are all gone, left or retired. They currently have NO TECH people working there!!
They recommended searching the forums!

My mechanic has been in touch with the rebuilder in NY who actually did the long block for AB and they have been very helpful.
Will keep you all posted as to situation.

Both my mechanic and I were very pleased with the results when we installed the long block in April of ‘21. Have followed the breaking procedures and oil change intervals to the letter, and the engine has been flawless. Installed the inline thermostat as well as the PCV mod, temps would run 180-188 on hot summer days with the AC running on the Scangage. All has been great, except now can’t seem to get the crankshaft seal to stop leaking. Will keep you posted.

This would be a bad mistake, and probably a long shot. I might drop the pan and check crank bearing clearances (especially #1). Too large clearance could cause vibration and leakage. Clearance would be too large if standard bearings were installed on a machined crank. Hope that's not your problem.
