Yes, buy the EM Plus. A table on the MX 1.3 page shows an ISO-9141 system, which is what the DII has, is not compatible with the MX 1.3. The EM Plus is what I have.

 

Here are pics of how my UG is mounted. It sits on a Velcro strip immediately to the left of the instrument binnacle. Its upper left corner actually leans against the A-pillar. The cable drops down to the left of the dashboard and loops back up before being tucked behind the door aperture seal before dropping down and being routed behind the access panel under the steering wheel before emerging on the other end to be plugged into the IBDII port.

This setup works well for me. No clunky brackets. It's out of the general field of view so it's not distracting yet I don't need to take my eyes off the road for more than a moment (unlike some setups I've seen where owners have mounted the UG down on the coin tray). Easy access to the buttons in the back by simply leaning the UG forward on the Velcro, or it can be removed from the Velcro with the looped cable giving some range to hold the UG in front of the steering wheel if preferred.

It says my car runs at 204 to 220f
What the hell
Don't have any issues with the temp the stuck temp gauge sits where it should
Did a head gasket job 20k ago no issues
No the gauges tells me it runs this hot

I LOVE your overhead mount! Very nicely done! (mine is covering the 4wd info plaque next to the shifter....fits perfectly, but I have to look down to see it).

204-210 or so is probably "normal" for the stock thermostat. 220 is probably going to give you head gasket issues....honestly, it was probably WHY you had to do a head gasket 20k ago.

The culprit? Mine was an aging and stuck thermostat. Do it right this time and get the 180F TD5 diesel thermostat. It is VERY easy to change.

Here is a quick link, but there are other suppliers. It shows the genuine part to be $80, while the third party is $35. If you search the forums, it's nearly unanimous that the genuine part "works" as it should (when comparing ultra-guage temps), but the 3rd party units sometimes run hot.

I went with the genuine and I typically run 188-194F. In 4-low, triple digits in Moab, it can creep to 208 and I may have seen 210 for a spell last season. I do not like getting that hot, and the 180F stat has kept me from that.

At $35, that third party is pretty tempting!

Don't fear your "heater not working as well" because it's 10F less. Your heater will work fine. Look at the design, part of the heating system bypasses the thermostat anyway, so that the heater heats up fast. I've noticed ZERO performance loss in Utah winters (which can be cold) with the cooler thermostat.

Nice mounting spot! I mounted my UG in the coin/ash tray. It's a perfect fit and only needed a strip of 3m tape. See attached!
