Hi guys,
I checked to make sure everything was tight under the Disco, and it was. I then took out the front prop shaft and wiggled the front pinion. There was no end play, but I could twist it about 5 degrees or so. Is that normal or should there not be any play at all? I then tried to wiggle the output shaft of the transfer case and that felt pretty tight. I inspected the rotoflex, that had some minor cracks in the rubber, but looked to be in good shape overall. The front prop shaft is brand new, I looked over that again and I can see a counterweight on it, so I assume it was balanced before I got it. Any ideas? Thanks.

 

5 deg. is normal.. did you check out mounts, like buzz mentioned? I like to put pressure on the bottom of the tranny and look for excessive play.

 

I actually had all of them out when I swapped transmissions and pinned the sleeves. All of the mounts looked fine.

 

Also, I do not have a locking CDL, so I cannot check it in 2WD.

 

Time to put it on a lift. Vibration and shakes on four jack stands in the driveway might not be as safe as you would need to be. Lift is better.

But... serious mechanic work can be done in simple conditions, after all it is not what is over the head of the mechanic (shade tree, home garage, multi-million dollar dealership) - it is what's in his head.

I took this video with the Disco on jack stands with it idling in drive. Don't worry Savannah, I did not get under it, lol. Please look at where the prop shaft connects to the transfer case. It looks to be wobbling. Sorry for the video quality, it looked better on my phone.

 

Here's a pix of what can easily result when a shaft lets go. Others will comment on what it looks like to them.

What do you have a whole hard drive filled with pix of broken and destroyed LR & their parts?

 

To scare the snot out of noobies of course. A picture is worth a thosand words they say. Take Dexmud, a concept that is easily illustrated with a picture. Or burying your rear diff.

 

That's exactly what my transmission looked like when I bought it. I'm just tring to figure out what is causing the shake. Could it be a bad output shaft bearing or could it be my new prop shaft faulty or maybe that wobble is normal?
