Default Voltage regulator replacement

2000 Disco II Disco 2
Do I have to dismount the alternator to replace the voltage regulator in it? The alternator is Bosch ERR 6413. Thank you in advance for your help!

You don't have to remove it from the engine but it'll sure make it easier to work on.
Why not replace the alternator altogether? Especially if it's the original alt.

Default Voltage reg.

Dear JUKE179r,
Thank you for your interest in my problem and your reply. Since I'm not an expert in any way or shape I might be missing something. It is a cost issue. A new alternator is $300+ vs a regulator $40-$60. I thought it made sense unless I'm missing something.

I understand what you are saying about the price differences but these Discos are 16-21 years old. I’m all about preventive maintenance since most of the Discos still have original parts that will eventually fail. I saw a few remanufactured alts with warranties on eBay for $120 -$150.
if you are going to disassemble the alt, don’t forget about the replacing the bearing. Those go bad too.

Yeah you can get a new 150AMP unit out of a 99-02 P38 RR for around 134.00. Parts Player was a brand I installed several starters/alternators for a few friends/customers and they were 100% new (made in China of coarse), but zero issues. I've replaced the regulator on an alternator I knew had worn out brushes with no problems. Or check a local junk yard/pick n pull and you can usually walk out with an alternator for 25-35.00. I always slap the RR equivalent into a D1/D2 as the extra 20/30AMP's won't hurt and it's 100% PNP Compatible.

I purchased a 150 amp RR p38 from eBay and there were a couple differences, at least with the one I got. The position of the cable connection looking from the front was at about 7 or 8 o’clock so near the bottom vs the original which is more like 11 o’clock, still worked. Also the pulley was smaller and didn’t fit with the belt. I was able to impact the pulley off my original and move it the RR reman, clearance is close to the casing but spins free and the tracks with the rest of the pulleys. I read that they were a direct swap so maybe I got one that was an oddball.

Never had a pulley issue so that is a first & yes if you are going from say a Valeo 120amp unit to a Bosch 130/150amp unit the main cable position is different, but you can very easily adjust it for that. Bosch 130 & 150 have the main cable to position in the same spot.

Dear Mike,
Thank you for your follow up. I'll get the bearings, that was a great suggestion. Thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Would the RR alternator have to to be from the same year as my 2000 D2? Thank you,--SeaRover

No special date but make sure the 150A alt fits a Thor V8 engine.
