I understand what you are saying about the price differences but these Discos are 16-21 years old. I’m all about preventive maintenance since most of the Discos still have original parts that will eventually fail. I saw a few remanufactured alts with warranties on eBay for $120 -$150.
if you are going to disassemble the alt, don’t forget about the replacing the bearing. Those go bad too.

Yeah you can get a new 150AMP unit out of a 99-02 P38 RR for around 134.00. Parts Player was a brand I installed several starters/alternators for a few friends/customers and they were 100% new (made in China of coarse), but zero issues. I've replaced the regulator on an alternator I knew had worn out brushes with no problems. Or check a local junk yard/pick n pull and you can usually walk out with an alternator for 25-35.00. I always slap the RR equivalent into a D1/D2 as the extra 20/30AMP's won't hurt and it's 100% PNP Compatible.
