A Warning for Disco 2 Owners
Hi,
Just thought I would re-iterate a warning that others have highlighted on this list
but I was unaware of.
Our Disco 2 (2000) owned since new has just completed 57K miles. We had
been hearing a cricket like chirping off and on for a couple of months. I had no
idea that this is a good heads up that the front drive shaft is going to give out.
Final symtoms were almost like an engine misfire when pulling off the line and
then..... We were doing maybe 30 miles an hour when it happened and I consider
us very lucky. I can't imagine what would happen if the Hookes joint failed at
70 miles an hour! It can immediately lock up the whole front end, to say nothing
of what the flailing shaft will do to your tranny, transfer case and floor. I was
lucky I could get the hairline crack in the tranny TIG welded.
Now don't get wrong I love our truck, this is our second but if your has 50K+ miles
on it I strongly recommend some preventative maintenance on the front drive shaft.
I would appreciate any comments on otherpotentially catastrophic issues.
Am I correct the rear drive shaft is not a concern?
Cheers, Mike Hopton

I have been warning people about the front constany velocity joint failing for years, however most just seem to not worry about it untill after it goes.
The rear drive shaft is fine, other then you need to add a grease fitting to the slip joint so it can be lubed, same with the front slip joint.
Other then that you should be fine.

when you say you hear a cricket noise can you hear it from outside or inside. Because when i turn on my heat i sometimes a cricket noise then when i put the heat on full blast it goes away. It does not do it all the time but just sometimes.

I have over 82k on mine and I've not done any kind of maintenance on said problem... can anyone here provide more details on how to perform this maintenance?
