Why I asked is that the cost of diesel in Australia is only a little more than petrol and a turbo diesel has way better fueleconomy than a petrol Disco. The second hand V8 Discos sell for a lot less than the diesel ones. Our petrol costs about $1:60 per Litre Aus and diesel about $1:70 per Litre Aus.

Thanks for the information

Cheers

If I could get my hands on a manual Tdi, I would be in heaven.fuel mileage on a Diesel is awesome and you can go a lot deeper in them. I saw a video of 2 guys in diving suits and a hose tied to the breather drive an old series across a lake

Here we have three grades of gas (petrol), regular which is 87 octane, mid grade which is 89 octane and premium which is any where from 91-94 octane, it depends on the gas station and what part of the country you are in.
Right now regular is $3.95, mid grade is $4.05 and premium is $4.15 per gallon, diesel is $4.49 per gallon. That is here whereI live. We would LOVE to get our hands on a diesel, but it just isint possible.
Yes it would cost more to fill up but you would still save money because of the MPG benifits.

When I bought my Disco I opted for a 4speed auto as it haseasier towing ability and it allows the engine to stay in the best torque/turbo area of the rev range. I dont do a lot of full on 4wd but I get in the mud on our farm.

I'm watching for a used mercedes diesel to swap into my Rover. It's a 5-cylinder 3.2ish Litre engine that puts out good power and great fuel economy. I found a Cat 3116 engine but thought that made be a little big for a Disco. As soon as I get my hands on the engine I'll figure out how to get it under the hood of my Disco.

Here in North Dakota the price of diesel is down to 4.05 a gallon although I'm sure that's temporary thanks to Hurricane Ike. Premium unleaded is under $4 a gallon.

The 316 ROCKS!!! 450,000 miles and never oncedid I break down, not once!
You can start looking for the MB diesel out of a totalled Sprintervan. The problem though is the anti theft. You MUST use the MB anti-theft. No way to by pass it.
One of my old customers was a salavage yard for big trucks and commercial vehicles. They had to pull the dash out of a wrecked Sprinter and build a engine test stand, complete with battery, ignition and instument cluster and key because you cannottest run one of those engines with out all of that crap.
Supposdly the anti-theft is inside the instament cluster. It was a nice stand on casters and everything. Wheel it out, plug in the engine hanging from a hoist, 2 gal can of fuel and fire it up. Rev it up, it runs good, shut it down and shelve it.

When I build my generator for the house I think that I am going to get a Kubota reefer engine from here as well as a fuel tank.
