Default water pump change

I have the water pump, fan clutch, and thermostat all on the way and I will be changing them out this weekend. Are there any pitfalls I need to be concerned with? I also do not have the fan clutch removal tool. Do I need one? Is the job more difficult without this tool or is it impossible. I hate buying unitasking tools.

You can use any 36mm open wrench, be it a shifter or a normal flat spanner. Use a bar or something to hold the pulley so that you can turn the nut.

A proper fan tool will make the difference between a really easy job and a frustrating as hell job because you can't get the damn fan off. Sure you may be able to redneck engineer something and get it to work 50% of the time maybe, but my experience is that it can be very frustrating. I would spend the $40 and get the proper tool, you will use it again I promise.

I saw a link in D1 forums for the tool at Advanced Auto parts. Will it work for my truck? As far as I know the D1 and D2 have the same fan clutch. It's only 25 bucks. I just thought of something I went with the imperial heavy duty fan clutch from Advanced, will this same tool fit the new fan clutch.

D1 and D2 have the same size nut, so you should be good there. I used the fan clutch tool from Advance, but you could just as well get by with a big shifter IMO. I don't know about the Imperial fan clutch size, that one you will have to figure out for yourself.

This is the best universal tool along with a 36mm thin fan wrench or 36mm combo wrench ground thin. Don't bother with a kit unless it has a universal pulley holder. I can get the fan off in 10 seconds with this.

I got it from AB for $50 but you can get it cheaper on ebay or amazon. Just search for universal fan clutch wrench. I bought from AB because I know theirs is made in the USA and I get things next day from them via UPS ground.

Save yourself a lot of grief and just buy yourself a 36mm fan clutch wrench. My experience has been that the tools at Advanced and Autozone are worn out. i.e.- the 36mm fan clutch wrench is stretched out to 38-39 mm.

I've had this happen more than once. The $25 for the tool is well worth avoiding the frustration and saving time.

You don't need to pay $50 for that tool from AB, the kit from Advanced comes with 2 pieces, one is the 36mm wrench and the other you use to stop the pulley from spinning. It is simple to use and does the job.
