Default What is that bolt on the bottom of the front cover near the oil filter housing?

I noticed a few drops on the driveway and got underneath to take a look. I observed that the large 22 mm bolt on the bottom of the front cover just to the side of the oil filter was coated in oil. I cleaned it up and after a few minutes oil was slowly coating the bolt again. Can't get the best view of the rest of the motor due to that plastic shield/cover in the way. I started to loosen it to see if there was an oring in there that needed to be replaced, but it started to leak a bit of oil so I tightened it back up. I cleaned up the plastic cover that allows oil to leak everywhere but from the source. Why that was put in there is beyond me.

This is my first Rover and I have only had it for about a week. I have looked in the rave but nothing is mentioned about what that bolt is or what it is supposed to do. I know it is close to the oil pump. Can anyone shed some light on this rather simple topic? On my next oil change would I be safe in removing it? Will it cause any issues with the oil pump?

Thanks for any input!

Early D2s had an oil cooler. 04's did not so the ports are blocked off. What you are looking at is one of the oil cooler ports.

Thanks. Do you know if an oring was installed? I need to find a way to stop that leak.

There is an o-ring on the threaded plug. Thread sealer may work...
