This was my first thought, too, bad fuel, low octane. Or injector issue, like "User" mentions.

Interesting. I did have a batch of bad gas. This happened around the time we had a gas shortage in the Carolinas. I checked the head last night and it was within tolerance. I'll check the block today, but I bet it was the gas. I'm still running the bad gas in my lawn mower and mower 'misses' all the time. I only used a few gallons of it in the Rover and I have filled up since then.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'm now thinking it was bad gas that caused the HD failure. It wont hurt to replace the cats though, since I already ordered them. I'll clean the injectors (again) as well just in case.

That link to JE Robinson that EXTINCT posted actually has a picture with a blown HG that looks exactly like mine. It was caused by pre-detonation.

Appreciate you all! I'll update again after I get her put back together and drive a bit.
