Have a 2000 disco II 4.0 v8. started hearing an intermittenticking noise in the engine.... took it to a landrover mechanic that diagnosed rocker arms. replaced rocker arms and still ticking. took it back to mechanic replaced lifters and valves.... still ticking.took out rocker arms and put old ones back in andhe gave up stated replace engine.... gave me an SRS code to bootandsaid flex platehas a crack. priced an egine with 45000mi for replacement of 2750. it is a real nice truck with the exception of the above mention.

 

step 1) find competent mechanic, get second opinion

 

Sounds like your ticking sound and cracked flex plate could be related. It the bolts holding the flex plates are not properly torqued they could be causing your ticking sound. Had that happen in the past on a vehicle. I fought with it forever and finally took it to a mechanic who found the problem. Loose flex plate bolts could also have been the cause of the crack. I would replace the flex plate and make sure the bolts are properly torqued before laying out the money for a new engine. But that is just my thoughts off the top of my head. I'm sure someone else will let me know if I'm way off.

I also agree with NiteTrain that you need to find a competent mechanic. It sounds like your mechanic knows very little if anything about Rovers. A competent mechanic would have diagnosed the problem rather than just throwing parts at it.

 

this mechanic is a known reputable mechanic in the area. that is why i was bonking my head against the wall. i had a co-worker who is a self mechanic as i..... stated, it soungd like the valve train. he recommended 1 quart of deisel fuel to an oil change for a 15minute run. change the oil again to see if it quited it down at all. (basically doing the easy flush thing). thought or other suggestions?
