I can't afford to replace my head gaskets right now, so I'm going to push the Rover in to the garage so it won't be outside in the cold and risk freezing.

Until I can fix it, is there anything I need to do? Possibly drain the contaminated oil? It may be sitting for a month or longer.

 

Pour a bottle of fuel stabalizer into the gas tank.
Change the oil and filter just use cheap oil and filter and I mean use something like Wal-Mart brand because you are just going to change it again after the head gaskets get done.
Put a battery tender on the battery do not unhook the battery and leave it sit for a month you will have problems.
After you change the oil start it and let it run for a min just long enough to prime the oil pump.
Once the oil light shuts off you can kill it and then leave it.

 

Top off your coolant bottle, to the lid with straight coolant, air up your tires to 40 pounds, remove the battery and cover up the truck, nothing else is needed.

 

Do I need to fill up the coolant if it's going to be in a heated garage?

 

No.
As long as it is not full of water you are fine, the cooling system could be empty its aluminum and its not going to rust.
But inside the engine are steel parts like your crank shaft it will rust if there is coolant or water in there.

 

I know this is not an ideal solution but it looks like you have a rack on your rover..you could sell the rack and have more than enough money to buy a rebuild kit..save up and buy another rack. You see a lot of vehicles that get parked and never used again or develop problems from sitting unused for a long period of time.

 

Mine won't sit for an extended amount of time. Probably no more than a month or so. I'm going to go ahead and order the Head Gasket kit, bolts, wires, plugs, and thermostat, and then save up another couple of weeks for the labor.

Are you sure its your head gaskets?
