Default What have you broken on the trail?

Driveshaft? Axle shaft? Ring / Pinion? Anything else?

Working on my D2 as a trail rig and looking for some past experiences to draw on. I think I've alreay helped my D2 about as much as I'm going to - removing the factory front and rear bumper and the running boards. However, I'm looking forward to seeing how much more a lift and some taller tires add (32" or so...).

You need to replace the 2 front u-joints in the double cardon, they will fail for sure. You need to replace both the stock diff's because of the weak spider gears, you only have 2 in each diff and need some sort of locker with 4 to 6 spider gears.
You will need to lift the truck if you are going to 32"s, are you running 16" or 18" wheels. If 18" wheels, they will need to go so you can install some 16's with stronger side walls.
What year is your truck, have you converted to a CDL t/case yet?

Lockers are on the board for the future. I have a driveshaft shop here in town that does work very reasonably. I'll probably remove the front and have them take a look. I'm going with the lift (RTE 2 + 1" spacer planned) first, then armor with front / rear bumper and sliders. I'm also planning some pretty extensive body trimming. I'd like to clear a 33" tire *285* but the jury's out. I'm still trying to figure what the heck someone was thinking with the rubber bushing? / isolator in the driveshaft. I've also gotta wonder if that harmonic balancer on the rear isreally necessary for a trail rig that'll rarely see 45 mph?

Harmonic balancer on the back of the t-case...that is the parking brake.

are you talking about an all out, hard core trail rig or just a nice truck that can handle it's own on the trail?

Why not gop to RTE's 3" lift and do it right for less money. Have you also read their list of additional parts needed to get full articulation?

RTE 2" alone will 'clear' 285s. Leave the harmonic balancer there until it falls off. It isn't bothering anyone. Replace the front drive shaft.

Yeah - I'm told the parking brake is there on the center diff I'm also told that there's a balancer in the mix? Not sure - I hadn't given it a serious look. I'm abig guy and getting under the rover at stock height's a bit ofa squeeze. It's better now with the side steps / moulding gone and the bumpers off.
