Can someone tell me what this small diameter black plastic hose is for ? Located against the firewall on right side.

Breather tube from the transfer case, differential, or some other component. Follow it back to its source if you're desperate to know which one.

the D1 transfer and transmission breather hoses have a loop on the end so you can't mistake them

Yep, front axle vent tube. Trans/transfer case are opposite side of engine, along firewall, with curled ends.
