Default Exactly same temp readings on 2 Discos...

I am new to LR and just bought a 2000 Discovery. Bought the Ultra Gauge, and these are the temps I am getting in 70 deg F weather at 40 mph. 206.6. 208.4, 201.2, 204.8 and 203 depending on AC or the heater is on. At a stoplight it can get up to 212 or 215 momentarily.

Thinking from this thread that I am running hot, I took the Ultra Gauge and put it on my friends a 2004 Disco. Both Discos have new coolant flushed properly, working water pumps, clean radiators and ac condensers. The temps on my friends Disco are EXACTLY the same to the decimal point as on my car.

What are the odds that we both have the same issue, or do these trucks run hotter than the mid 190s normally? The next thing I was going to try was the soft spring thermostat part number PEL500110. Thank you.

Get the genuine LR 180º thermostat and those temps will come down.

Ok thanks schwaggy. I'm pretty sure my friend's 2004 had all original parts including the thermostat, though. I talked to the parts person at Atlantic British, and he said that in the southern US, Texas and Florida where it's real hot, he sells a lot of the Thermostat Soft Spring Style PEL500110, which apparently are for the Discovery Diesel...

I have a D@...got it w/blown head gaskets...judging by the size of the chambers when the heads cam back from the shop...and the fact that the intake gasket required a bit of re-working...I'd say it had been done no fewer than once before and possibly twice...so, the compression may be a tad higher than most...Given that, I installed a VDO coolant temp gauge in a modified "TEE" in the radiator hoses...(see earlier post on that set-up), taking the temp at that location, I'm running about 205 95% of the time, seldom more than 210...except towing a covered, fully loaded Uhaul at 70-75 on grades in Washington last spring...with the pedal mashed in 3rd gear...didn't get over 220. oh, the D2 was loaded too...once I got ALL the kinks outta the cooling system, it's been studly! On to the kinks! There can be absolutely NO LEAKS of ANY SIZE ANYWHERE!!! GOOD LUCK!

Where do you guys get the 180 thermostat?

My UG says I'm peaking at 208 at a fully warmed idle. Seems high. What's considered the overheat temp on 4.0L Disco?

Anywhere from 188-208 is okay. Optimal temperature is 188-195.8. I've noticed with my truck that during the summer my idle will go up 203-208 and will be 195 highway. I suspect my radiator is slightly clogged. Im also due for a waterpump change.

The highest temperature I would tolerate is 215 F before pulling over and checking something out. While technically that still isn't overheating, there is definitely something going on. Anywhere around the 230F range you are risking damage.

Bit of a broken record here but I get mine from lucky 8 llc. Although the morotrad is better than the orginal one that came in the Disco 2, the Land Rover Grey 180 is the way to go. Dropped my temps from 203 down to 188.
