Default What Oil?

I am new to this forum and I just bought a really pristine 04 DII to replace my tired 00 DII. The 04 looks and drives like it just came out of the factory (64K obviously easy miles). My 00 DII has had an ever louder engine click for 3 or 4 years now (140K hard miles). I don't know what the cause is (valve lifter, cylinder liner?) but it has not affected the engine performance in any way, just annoying. I have been told by someone who should know that some of the oil passages in the LR engines are undersized. My question for this forum is what oil do you recommend?
My 2nd question is in regard to front drive shaft problems. Based on what I have read on this forum some (all?) front drive shafts are prone to failure. I have had no problems of that nature with my 00 DII, or even thought about it. Are there certain years/design that exhibit the problem? Any precautions?

Oil passages are fine. Poor service intervals is a problem. Clean PCV system, and use Rotella (Shell) oil, cheap, and 15W40 in warm areas, 5W40 in the frigid north. Drive shaft, if OEM, should be replaced or rebuilt so it is fully greasable. When it fails, it can poke a hole in tranny. And it does not always give a lot of warning. The sealed U joints dry out and sieze. Keep away from engine overheating, consider an Ultra Gauge or scanner so you can see accurate temps. There is a 180F alternate stat that many have used. Plus a high miles service list in out tech area.

Hi
I use BP V3000 10W 50. I change the oil every 5000k's or 3000 miles as that was what I was told to do on Rover V8's a long time ago.

I live in the Tropics and by the time the oil is 3000 miles old it is a dark gold colour. Always strikes me as a bit of a waste but then the engine is okay.

Can't coment on the drive shaft but it has 175000 miles on it!

Cheers Jerry

Yes, I always forget that in the really hot places on earth Rover specs even higher oil viscosity, up to 60 weight, always check the chart in the manual.

I think a 20w-50 or a HD-40 would suite your needs better.

As for the drive shaft, are you willing to take a roll of the dice and pray you don't loose your drive shaft and the tranny, pretty expensive roll of the dice if you loose and many have?

Correct and my typo. It's actually 15w 40.

The shaft thing is something I have only become aware of from skulking around this excellent forum.

Cheers Jerry

Just put in the 15w-14 Rotella. Why does it come in gallon bottles?? Anyway, next question is what filter? I got the Fram Superguard, but have heard mention of larger/better filters.

Don't use FRAM, the WIX, Purolator/Mann, etc. are better. See https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...estions-46975/ . I run the Purolator / Mann filter, it adds capacity to the oil system. Fram spends more money on ads instead of making a better filter.

used the mobil1-204 filter, rotella 15w 40. mine clicks also, with the rotella oil, the clicking is less obvious, but still there. +1 on reading discomikes post about high mileage service. happy motoring.
