What spins in the T-Case when the Tranny is in Neutral? <<< UPDATED! See VIDEO
Embarrassed to ask that but I need to know like "yesterday". I haven't had any time to do the research.
THANKS

Nothing should spin in the t case when the tranny is in neutral. The tranny tailshaft does not turn. If you ran the engine with the tcase unbolted from the trans the tailshaft would spin from drag in the trans but you'd beable to "grab" it and stop it from turning. Unless your tcase is in neutral then nothing spins inside it when the trans is in neutral.
I would assume that the main gears inside the t-case would turn but the output gear set would remain still.
When you shift into neutral you are unhooking the drive gears from the main gear set.

What are you trying to figure out Josh?
Did one of your customers blow a t-case output shaft?
Stuck in neutral?
Grinding when in neutral?
Have you pulled the inspection cover?
Year/model/miles please.

2003 DII with 99k:
I hear grinding when you put the tranny in D and the T-case in N. But not grinding like when you are shifting gears and don't depress the clutch all the way, but more like two metal plates (or two floor tiles) sliding against each other.
We took it to a transmission shop and the tech said the T-case bearings are shot. I know there are ball bearings and taper bearings in the t-case and i think (obviously) if that is the case then a full t-case replacement (used w/ warranty) will be cheaper in part and labor than bearing replacement.
It was suggested to drain the oil, check for metal, fill with ATF, run with all wheels off the ground, and drain again checking for metal, fill with 85-140w and test drive.
(BTW it's 940PM here on the islands since we are a third world country we don't observe DLS time.. so its passed my bed time. Good night!)
PS. i won't be able to do the t-case swap =(
I will be in Florida in a few weeks.
Bearing # 21 shown below

sits on the front output housing race # 22 below

and bearing # 11 sits on bearing race # 12 for the rear
there u can also see the intermediate gears

How much work is it going to be to replace that bearing?
And if that bearing is toast then I would assume the t-case was ran low on oil in which case is the rest of the t-case on its way out too?
