99-04 D2's were designed to run warmer vs previous LR V8's for emission purposes and BMW got their hands on it hence the Bosch Motronic System.

Can you run a Bosch Motronic system with a 160/170F thermostat = sure but your emission system is not going to like it & the ECU will consider it cold & make it run rich (something all Rover V8's already do!). SAI really makes the Bosch Motronic system sensitive to cooler temps hence the P0126 fault.

182-215F should be the overall temp range with a 180F OEM style thermostat.

In TX during the extreme summer I normally average 193F to 204F cruising at 70-75MPH with the HVAC on full blast on either the 99 D2 or 02 D2 with 180F OEM style thermostats. Slow down to 65MPH and it will cool even better. Once past 65MPH it's maxed out the air passing thru the radiator and temps will climb. Just the nature of the beast with a small grill opening/small radiator surface. Not to mention aftermarket lights/winches blocking it even more.

The engines can take 220F, but they're no longer spring chickens. With that said 182-215F range = you will be fine.

Thanks for your answers everyone. And good to know what ranges are considered safe for these vehicles. Also forgot to mention mine is non SAI 2000 D2 and it is a Stant 180° thermostat currently. And PCV Mod done.

I asked mainly because I was getting ready for a drive last weekend and I noticed that it was idling steady around 203° instead of the usual 199.4° that my disco does and found my water pump to be leaking. New water pump, gasket, temp sensor, fan clutch and oem 180° t-stat on its way.

I wasn't concerned about the temp but got me thinking about if you all keep mental note of your temps as well aside from watching for overheating. Judging by the quick responses that seems to be a definite yes.
