Grew up working on stuff, Dad was a gearhead. Used to drag race against Garlitts in the 50's.

I still have mine. Though it is not in as good a shape as it once was. a 1976 Fiat 124 Spider. This was after I left it sitting at my parents for a couple of years until I got a place with storage to park it out of the weather. It's currently stripped down and awaiting a repaint.

To give you a clue how long I have owned it, it was just a 12 year old used car when I bought it.

It was pretty common way back when, shop class grade 7 we were tearing in to inline 4's and 6's before senior high v8's. Everyone worked on everything, my dad sold cars but he did not work on them. He was firm believer in the I could buy any car I wanted as long as I could afford to pay for, insure, put gas into and work on it.

I learned about finicky from that Cortina as well as electrical troubleshooting, good old Lucas electrics.

Italian electrics will teach you how to run really fast too, when they burst into flame! (I had a '73 Alfa Berlina 2000, a 1980s Lancia Prisma, and several 1970s Fiats, along with a lot of things that had similarly bad Lucas junk).

'78 GMC Conversion van. hand me down from my parents. had a reclining seat/bed in in the back, captain chairs that could turn and lock in any direction and mood lighting that ran around the perimeter of the ceiling. probably not the best vehicle for a 16 year old boy. drove it until the transmission decided to drop both 2nd and 3rd gear.

first vehicle i ever bought myself was a '84 VW Vanagon. red on bottom and white on top. the Vanagaon's first water cooled year. engine in the back, radiator in the front. had the longest coolant hoses i have ever seen. eventually i overheated it several times. built a bed platform in the back and took it on road trips and camping all the time.
