Default What's the deal with green Peak 50/50 vs Dex cool

What's the real deal with green Peak vs Dex Cool? I've always run green since I bought my first disco, and found this forum years ago. Had my HGs done a couple of years ago, and the indy rover shop filled it with Dex Cool. I asked why they used it, and their reply was "That's what all our guys run on their rigs". I had a second indy rover shop help with one of my mods and the shop owner said, "hey, noticed you're running green coolant, and you really need to switch to Dex Cool".

His only reasoning was because if another coolant is added, it could gel/coagulate with the green.... I'm like, dude, I have a Disco, I always have three gallons in the back just in case.

Thoughts?

Isn't that a valid argument regardless of which coolant you currently have? "Don't run the orange stuff, if you add another coolant it could gel/coagulate...."

I haven't heard a good argument for one over the other, but I've seen issues from old DexCool that wasn't changed clogging up radiators. That's why I switched to the Green/Glycol antifreeze. I just use the local house brand pre-mixed and keep a gallon in the back at all times.

No difference really - the only concern you have is aluminum safe coolant. Dex was what they had originally, the problem is it reacts with some gasket materials and causes an orange goo that gums stuff up. As it is with the amount of aluminum in engines now most coolants are safe, you can research it lots of threads on Dex and Land Rovers.

Mine still has Dex but is getting changed to Green simply as a pro-active measure - I can always find Green, Dex can be difficult in some places. So if I have a major leak, I can not top Dex with Green if Green is all I can find, that requires a system flush.

Any aluminum safe coolant is going to do you just fine. The key(as the shop pointed out) is to make sure you stick with something you like and works for you and dont mix them. Also a coolant flush/exchange every 3 years regardless of mileage

I personally use G40 pink euro coolant that is used in all VW/audi/porsche/mercedes and newer rover and jaguar stuff.

I use the green stuff & no coagulated goo has ever appeared in my cooling systems. The older green stuff didn’t used to have the 5year or 100k rating, and that has since changed. Sadly most shops now days MUST go by the book regardless of what works, and they won’t also take your parts vs what is either dealer or the $$$ OEM equivalent.

I've had 2 head gasket failures; one in a GM which is where Dex originated, and my Rover which had it when I bought it. I've heard and read that it eats head-and other gaskets and that's all the info I need to not use it.

If your mechanic is telling you to use DEX, then you should probably find a new mechanic.

I think you are fine with either one if you change it out often.

I've noticed a bunch of the British Land Rover owners (mostly with diesel engines) still use and prefer the orange Dex Cool coolant.
They are the ones thinking I'm crazy (the Daft Yank with the lifted V8 Disco ) switching to regular coolant, Zerex G-05.
