What's involved with changing the oil pump gears?

Default What's involved with changing the oil pump gears?

Pondering what to do with my '03.

It's leaking oil at the front of the motor and I'm thinking that maybe my oil pump is about to go even though it's been only 10,000 miles since replacement.

Anyway, I looked at the RAVE manual and it gives good directions on how to remove the pump, but no instructions on replacing the gears inside.

AB sells the gears for $100ish.

Until someone figures out a way to fix the oil pump/block machining problems for good, I'm tempted to replace the gears and gaskets in order to buy some time.

Who replaced your oil pump, and by time, how long ago? If a dealer did it, it will be covered by Rover for 12 months.
Just cause it is leaking in no way does that mean you need to replace the pump again, just a seal.

It was done 2 years and 10,000 miles ago by a local garage.

I know that it's not necessarily the case that the oil pump is bad for certain, but since I'm going to be replacing a seal or gasket on the front, I might as well consider replacing the gears.

The obvious thing to do is to check for cracks in the gears while it's off.

I'm just wondering what's involved should I have to replace them. Do they slide right off or are they pressed into the housing?

the outer gear rides in the housing the inner gear slides onto the crank when you refit this see if you slide the gears front to back, you may have to leave the front seal out to do this check.
If the gears are hard to move then they are loaded and this is what damages them

I'm replacing my oil pump or actual pump gears on my 03 I would like to know do I have to drain the oil or any fluids to take off the front cover

You have to drain oil and coolant, then remove the oil pan before you ever do the front cover

Oh, okay. I figured I wouldn't have to take the oil pan off drain any of the oil just the coolant.. I can't find anything on the web that shows a step by step and I have the Rave manual but it's not showing me specifically
