It may LOOK gorgeous, but there's still ample room for ugliness. I bought an '02 in beautiful cosmetic condition and it seemed to run like a champ. It had 55,000 and I got it for $10,500. Within a month I had dropped $3500 in her with new head gasket, brakes, various belts, etc. Now I'm in need of new CV joints ($750), probably a new Mass Air Flow Sensor ($600) and probably new O2 sensors ($300).
They're great trucks, but when you factor in repairs, gas at 14mpg and high maintenance then it's probably not a "great" deal but a pretty average one at best.
As for which years are best? 2004 remains the winner for unanimous votes of the best of the Discovery IIs. Some of the reasons some prefer a particular year is for certain off road widgets like a Center Locking Differential which is not on the 2000-2003 models. For the most part all DIIs in the 1999-2002 range suffer similar failures. 2003-2004 models have some failures common to them. None of them are what I would call "reliable" by any means.
