I don't have a lead foot, but on longer trips of 4 hours or more, I am getting 17+ MPG. When I left Houston for SoCal, with inside of rover loaded and roof rack on top got 19-22 MPG. This was per Ultra Gauge, but before lift, snorkel, cam/ lifters. Consistently get almost 400 per tank now.

The Ultra Gauge is just doing the math as you enter the data, it has no real time gas mileage feature.

Another point to consider is the size of tires is as much a factor as having a roof rack, heavy load etc. I would suggest using an MPH speedometer app to find your actual speed, then you can do the math and figure out how much off your odometer actually is.

For years I thought I was getting around 340 miles out of a tank on a long one way trip across the state... Then I got new larger tires and suddenly I was only getting 295 miles out of the same tank, but it was the same trip/same destination I had previously made, I did not take a 45 mile shortcut!!!

Bottom line, with stock 16" wheels and tires my odomenter/speedometer were off on the long side, with bigger tires I was off in the other direction.

Meanwhile the Ultragauge which has always showed 5mph less than the dash gauge still showed 5mph less but was off in the other direction which was only discovered using an MPH app. Neither before or after tire swap was the UG correct!

I'm convinced the only way to know is to actually know the miles you drove (from google maps, etc) and the fuel you consumed and then do the math. you can not reliably go by the dash or the UG.

As a bonus you get to know your actual speed on the highway!! I was wondering why everyone was going slower than me when my speedo said 70, turns out I am actually going 77 when the dash says 70!!

What ever the mpg is it's never going to be great on these discos

I also noticed I'm not getting any better mpg with premium fuel over regular fuel

so I will continue to use regular fuel

If you can't tell the difference between premium and regular then you probably have other issues. I think my truck is the worlds most sensitive fuel quality monitor. I can tell instantly if I get bad/old gas. I once thought I was doing good buying premium gas at a budget station, but my mechanic called me out just by looking at the gum in the fuel rail.

Top Tier premium gas is required because the computer was programmed for that type fuel. It will adapt to other fuels but at a cost to the ideal situation.

It is possible you don't even know how well your truck should run if you just use regular.

I will add the caveat that if you are in Canada and your regular does not contain ethanol then my advise may not apply.

All gas in Canada with the exception of Shell 91 has ethanol

I only use Shell 91, since it has no ethanol, I normally get around 550km (340mi) out of a tank. That all depends on where I'm driving and how fast. If I try to keep up to traffic on the highways west into the mountains at 120, I get about 400 max. If I do a lot of city/freeway then 550 isn't a problem, may even be able to stretch 600

thats very inpressive if you get almost 600 km
even when I had my 04 disco with a new engine I was lucky to get 500

I don't see anything special in these trucks to run premium I don't hear any detonation or pinging the fuel rails are not any special material fuel injectors are made of same material as any other fuel injector that runs on regular and mostly I don't see any improvement in mpg or performance using regular
I'm getting roughly 450-470 km mostly Hwy driving

The requirement for premium is because there is no EGR valve. Low octane gas gums up in the heads.
Like black gum stuck in the heads intake runners.
