Depending on your State, that is illegal as all get out and is a fast track to County Jail.

In AZ when I lived there you could carry a pistol in a holster on your
hip as long as it was in plain sight ,,so I did at times.

Yes most states have the "in plan sight" law. That is for hunters, anybody can carry a sidearm in plan sight, but try going to the mall with a S&W on your hip and not be in a uniform, not going to happen. You would have the police on you so fast it would make your head spin.
I could walk down town Grand Rapids with a the gun my hip in plan sight, again the police would be on me so fast I'd get dizzy.
Unless you have a conceal and carry permit (at least here in MI) you cannot carry a loaded firearm in a vehicle. That goes for any loaded firearm.
If you get pulled over and the cop sees it you'll be spending the night in jail.
If you go into the store and somebody breaks into your car and stealsthe gun, you'll be in jail. They kill somebody you'll be an assecory.
If you are on personal property and have WRITTEN permission to be on that property then you are fine, you can carry how/what and as long as you like. In a car, your pocket, your shoulder, however you want.
Basically, you need to check your local laws, they vary state by state and county to county and city to city.
The Constitution of these United States gauntees your right to have a firearm, but your local determines how and when you can carry/use that firearm, unless you want to take the time and spend the money to fight that local law and take it to the US Supreme court.
You will win, but it will cost you untold amounts of money.

Yeah it is pretty crazy. The laws vary from state to state so much that I wont carry out side of MI. There are states that have the same/similar laws as MI and I can carry in those states, but it is to confusing.
Obvisously the best thing to do is to stay out of a situation, its only a truck, you can buy a new one. But if my kids are in the back seat you can bet your a$$ I'm putting up a fight.
My moms husband is from Canada and he is so anti-gun that it is funny. He doesnt understand that bad guys can still get guns even if they were outlawed.

I carry a firesteel, a cheap folding pocket knife with a 3inch blade, about 10 feet of 10lB test nylon monofilament a pocket compass and a whistle. If you've got Google Earth have a look at 54°17'52.18"N 3° 7'8.25"W - that's about a half hour drive from my place which should explain the slightly odd collection I carry in my pockets.

Since it's illegal to even own any hand gun over here, fullstop, go to jail if you have one, do not pass Go do not collect £200, I don't/can't carry one. Rifles and shotguns are permitted provided the appropriate licences are obtained, this will involve Police checks, a requirement to have somewhere you can safely use it and usually a need to own it rather than just the desire. No firearms or shotguns may hold more than three rounds, including in the breech and must be modified to ensure this if they would normally be able to load more. As far as I know there aren't any pocket sized rifles or shotguns available in the UK, so I can't carry one.

Now only the criminals in the UK have them and they're becoming more and more prevalent apparently. Not that long ago a guy was jailed for converting 90 Mach 10 blank firing replicas into the real McCoy by a little machining and some barrel swaps... all done in his garden shed.

It didn't used to be this strict, but then Michael Ryan killed 16 people in Hungerford in 1987 and Thomas Watt Hamilton killed 16 schoolkids and their teacher in Dunblane Primary School in 1996.

Am I in favour of the ban? No... I think it was a kneejerk reaction largely to quench the media fanned flames of public outrage. It also means our pistol shooting Olympic teams have to practice in Switzerland instead of the UK... small wonder we never win anything. However, statistically speaking, you are less likely to get shot in the UK than anywhere else in the World - Heart disease remains the biggest killer on both sides of the "pond".
