Did this truck explode a water pump? When the pump went in my '97 I had bearings and rollers all over the front of the engine. Guessing the pump was replaced not too long ago, or it's toast now since you are doing head gaskets it clearly got HOT at some point.

You know it is funny you mention that. Everything has been running fine, however I started doing my head gasket (see photos of my teardown here -http://photobucket.com/2000lrdisco2headgasket ) because of coolant disappearing, chemical test done in expansion tank tested positive, and when I took my heads to the machine shop the lady said to me as soon as she saw the heads - "someone was running it hot".
As for the water pump, here is a photo of the one I pulled today.

No ball bearings seen elsewhere...

Looks fine to me, except I noticed the long bolt on the left side had oil and water on it. I guess cause it is in the oil pump area???

How long have you owned the truck? I would venture to guess that the PO had the water pump explode at some point. Perhaps it got hot enough to prompt them to unload the vehicle hastily to dodge a hefty top end job bill?

Long bolts require thread sealant because they go through to the inside of the block.

If the water pump has no play in the shaft and the bearing is smooth don't worry about it.
