Default Where to find a used 4.6 engine

Hi All,

I am about to purchase an ’04 DII and I would like to askfor some direction in sourcing a used 4.6 engine.

I am looking at two vehicles:

The first one that I have my eye on is an ’04 SE that has73K miles on the clock and a non working motor. It is at a local dealer here in Massachusetts – I will try to get overthere tomorrow to look at it – but right now I do not have details on why themotor does not work.

After reading through a lot of information on this site withregard to common issues with the DII – I feel that it would be good to source aused engine for the above vehicle. Thiswould enable me to have any work done to the engine to button it up beforehaving it installed. I can do the restof the Major Service items and upgrade the drive shaft myself.

I would appreciate any tips or advice on sourcing a usedengine. Just to note – I cannot affordthe $7K reman long block that I saw on the Atlantic British site…

For reference – I am also looking at an ’04 DII S with 58Kon the clock. That is scheduled for aninspection by a local LR dealer this coming Thursday – so I have a few days tofigure out which of these vehicles (if any) makes sense for me.

Thanks very much for the input.

How much are they asking for the Disco with the bad engine? How mechanical are you?

the asking price is $4,500 - I spoke to the dealer and they will accept something lower. I am a DIY type - above average mechanical ability.
Thanks very much for your help!

Depending on the shape of the rest of the car, I would think that anywhere near $4,500 is way too much. I would half that and see what they counter you with.

Thanks, i did not know where to come in at. I am thinking that if it is clean - that anything sub $3k is a win...

I saw this one recently, for sale in newton, just an example

2003 Land Rover Discovery II SE7-Trades?

Seems like the entire thing has been replaced including motor. He'll trade too. $6500 is price. $4500 for one with a bad motor seems really high to me

From further reading - it seems that I want to go with a "top hatted" block or engine and not just a used replacement engine. Is that the way to go?

When you haggle with them, tell them your looking at a minimum of 7K to put a new engine in it. Then add the cost of what they want for it, and tell them it is not economically feasible to do that. You can hit them hard on the price. Worst they can say is no. They are only going to get about 500 to 800 from the junk yard for it.

If you look at re-manufactured/rebuilt from Atlantic British or any other quality engine builders your at 7K easily. Maybe if they won't negotiate on the price much you can have them install the new engine without charge....just some thoughts.

Yes, that is the better way to go but you are talking $5000 to $7000 for a decent block set up.
