Default Whining diff(?) sound with video

I've been told by 2 shops now that my front diff is bad and needs replacing. Before I order the diff, can you look at this video and see if you guys agree that the sound you hear while I'm coasting is in fact differential noise? Thanks.

Did chunks of metal and silver fluid come out? That would be one sign. You should also be able to make the sound change by putting in a stiffer lubricant, like 85W150. My computer may not be reproducing the sound correctly.

This stuff seemed to make my transfer case just a little quieter LUBEGARD Gear Fluid Supplement

The fluid was definitely metallicy/silver. Had some good chunks in the bottom of the cup. Almost aluminium looking.

So, why do you need to ask????
Now, where are you going to buy a used guaranteed front diff.
Might call Paul Grant, number below for a good price.
Make sure you flush the axle tubes and closely inspect the 3 sets of bearings, use 85/140 gear oil.

I'm just making sure the problem is the differential before I order one, which I went ahead just now and got one from Paul Grant. Heck of a nice guy. Thanks for the help Mike. I know who to go to now if I need good, cheap used parts. I'm new at working on these things, and am not the most skilled guy out there diagnosing problems, so that's why I signed up here.

Something in your diff is bad. Could be the bearings or gears or who knows. Unless you can and plan on rebuilding the diff your best bet is to just buy a used one. Even with a used one I'd run a pattern check on the ring gear and the backlash before installing. Or just toss it in there with some 85-140, they're cheap enough.

Hi All,

Need a bit of advise. I have an 2005 LR3 with 106K miles and I have the same symptoms of a whining noise when I'm coasting. My independent shop tells me that the sound is coming from the differential and I need to replace it. I don't have the funds to get it replaced and I'm planning to go on a trip from PA to South Carolina this weekend.

I have been driving the truck for a good 5K miles with this whining noise. I thought is was just tires that I need. But with this info. Do you guys think I can make it to south carolina and back?

what is the worst thing that could happen?

Thanks for the help

Alvin

LR3 is a completely different truck, but the rear diffs do go bad in LR3s from time to time. I believe Justin at Lucky8 either sells a rebuild kit, or new diffs.
