looking for the right Discovery 2 to start my Land Rover journey with.

Found a well-maintained, low mileage 99 that seems just great.

However, when I took it on the highway and hit 60+mph it started making a whining noise. (Link below) just curious as to if it’s a critical problem with the Truck or something that’s as simple as changing out some fluids.

hard to tell if it's drive train or electrical..... Alternators can whine with bad bearings. Trans and CDL can whine too.... Wheels bearing can whine.. less likely wind noise.

Try holding throttle steady at 2200 rpm (rpm on vid) while in park and see if you can hear it.....

 

Mine makes the same noise - it only comes on around 70 mph and sounds kind of electrical as if it's coming from the steering column area. It's a bit quieter than it sounds in the video but I assume it's the same.

I can't replicate the noise while in park or until it gets up to speed on the highway, which rules out a bad bearing or pulley. I ruled out drivetrain because it disappears if I take my foot off the gas - it's only when throttle is applied. Can't be wind noise if it's only throttle on.

No clue what it is. Been like that since I bought it - 6 months and 3k miles. I searched around for this a while ago and never found anything.

 

Check the front driveshaft.

 

Definitely not applicable to me - noise only presents with foot on gas. Also, I replaced the driveshaft and the noise is unchanged.

 

Most likely alternator - mine had the exact same whine. Take off the belt and run it for a minute and see if it's gone.

 

I had a very similar noise last year. Tracked it down to old worm pullys on the serpentine belt. Very cheap and easy to fix. Take the belt off and start the truck. If the sound is gone then it's a pully. Depending on which one it might only be a few bucks to replace. also a good opportunity to replace your belt if need be.
It's the bearings in the pullys. They start to whine when the trucks get older.
