Default whining noise with acceleration: tranny or power steering?

Progress been slow with the new truck and still have much to sort out. Today the truck started making a loud whining noise when pressure is applied to the accelerator pedal. As soon as I let up the noise pretty much goes away. Does not make noise while turning the steering wheel in either direction nor does it sound much while the truck is idling. This leads me to believe the tranny or diffs are the culprit. However in my opinion the whining sound Im hearing sounds remarkably similar to a failing power steering system.

The tranny shifts fine (except 1st) and theres no hesitation during acceleration.

Doesn't sound like power steering, mine is groaning when cold in the morning and only when turning the wheel. I would vote transmission, fluid level ok?

Hi TRIARII, suggestion, remove the serpentine belt and run for a short distance, that will eliminate any ancillaries. Be careful though as you'll have no PAS so the steering will be mega heavy and ensure it's only a short run or you'll maybe overheat.

It does sound like the trans but I'm not too sure.

That could be alternator. I got very similar noise but it still works. My other has very similar noise too but its the A/C compressor. I can verify mine with a stethoscope.

Thanks for the quick and useful feedback. Its not the Alternator because I have a brand new unit. Crawled underneath the truck to examine and found the transmission to be the culprit. Whining coming directly from the tranny. Gradually got worse even while idling so I went to Autozone and did a quick tranny filter/fluid change. The old fluid was nearly black but no chunks or shiny metallic bits on the magnetic or in the pan; just excess black silt.

Truck is running smooth and quit again. Tranny shifts fine and no whining. Im gonna do another filter/fluid change in a little bit just to make sure I flush out as much of the old black fluid as possible. Thanks for the feedback. Always appreciated.

You can just do a filter / trans fluid change in a parking lot?

Crazytown.

How long did it take you?
