Default Whining noise on deceleration. Bearing or Diff?

Hello everybody. Firstly, thank you for reviewing my thread.

Symptom: whining when decelerating from speeds over 20mph. The sound will start about 1-3 seconds after I release the accelerator pedal.

When: After off-roading in 4 low locked for 3 straight days, I noticed the noise.

Diagnosis process: Sounds like it’s coming from rear but could be front.
1. changed rear diff fluid. Color was ok, but was a little shiny. Noise still present after
2. changed front diff fluid. Color was ok. But only about 1qt came out! Found pass side axle seal leaking. Discovered my modified vent line is too small a diameter. Fixed that problem for now. Noise still present.
3. checked tires for proper pressures as I set the rears to 40 and front to 30. Set to 35 all around, noise still present
4. changing center diff fluid today and checking wheels for the bad bearing by doing the wobble test. Will report back

Anyone have any ideas? And dumb question: if it is the pinion bearing ...estimate on how long I got?

I took a video from my dash. If you turn it up you can hear the whine.

Rear hub bearings generally sound more like a brake dragging in my experience. Same with the front.

My guess would be Differential I have one that has been whining for a lot of miles I just change the fluid regularly and I keep an eye on it

Default Update 1:

So I changed center diff fluid. It came out all black and crap. Also noticed this little roller bearing (or something) on the magnet!

I really thought I changed the diff fluid more recently.
there 257k on the truck so there’s that.the noise is still present after changing center diff fluid. I know I shouldn’t drive it.

Hi There,

What was the end result on the whining. I have a 2013 Freelander and makes the same news whine on deceleration.

Thanks

It’s a 3 year old thread but the photo with the needle bearing on the plug looks suspicious.

AFAIK, there are no needle bearings in the diff. There are taper roller and ball bearings. could be part of a gear tooth .....

Hi Cositsworthit,

I have the same issue with the identical sound.
Could you let me know what the problem was in the end and how you resolved it?

Thanks,

Hello all. I forgot to update this thread.

After all of that diagnosis I ended up getting new diffs from Great Basin Rovers with lockers. No more whining noise.

So at the end of the day, the noise was from the front diff.
