Whining Transfer Box?

I have owned my 1999 TD5 Automatic Disco for about 6 years, bought in WA and now residing in Tasmania, I am not very mechanical, but try to tackle a few tasks here and there....
To the problem I am having. A few weeks ago I had a bit of a whine somewhere after a 30-40 km drive, but decided to do something about it later. But last week I was driving after a short stop, and I had a pretty horrendous whining and the car just locked up in the road. I sat there a while in everyone's way, then I put it into first gear instead of drive and got motion, so I limped home at about 20 kms/h. In the morning I decided to take a look at the fluids in the diff, gearbox and transfer box, (had no idea of a transfer box until i did a search.) everything was pretty good apart from the transfer box(it was low) so I bought some Dexron lll auto fluid and topped up the transfer box, and for a drive, still had noise but not as bad, I thought the box would be munted anyway. Long story short, I took it to my local everyday mechanic, and we went for a drive, it had freed up somewhat, but It was still getting a whine, he confirmed that it was transfer box after putting it on the hoist, but suggested a Land Rover specialist...it mainly does it on downhills when accelerator is off, and there is still a slight noise when driven at speed, but definitely a lot worse de-accelerating at slow down. Obviously I feel the damage is done as the transfer box was low on fluid. I wandered if running for a while would settle it down, or am I delusional! Any thoughts guys?

I had the same whining in mine when I bought it. When I drained the transfer case only about a 1/4 cup came out. Filled it with new fluid and that quieted it down a bit, but it still whined (damage was already done). I just bought a new transfer case off eBay for $300 from an 04’ so I could get the diff lock. It’s super quiet now. Good luck, but the damage is probably already done, especially if you already locked it up once.
upgrade to new oil has not helped at unfortunately, I will have put this on back burner for now, and look at down the road later in the year... thanks everyone.
